Letterpress is special. It's where letters and images are inked and pressed into paper, leaving the ability to feel each letter on a page. The result is a high quality, handcrafted product that wants your hands all over it.
Techniques like watercolor, foil stamping and edge painting are often applied for added effect. Letterpresses are no longer manufactured. Biba operates four presses that date between 1912 and 1964.
Yes, we have a press built the year the Titanic sunk and one that is just now getting it's AARP card.
Letterpress printing is a labor-intensive process that requires the pressman to manually ink the press and feed it paper one sheet at a time. The pressman visually checks for proper alignment of colors, where other processes use automated processes.
Common printing processes include engraving, offset (often called lithography), digital printing and screen printing. They differ from letterpress in how plates are made and by the impression they leave on paper. Engraving raises text and images on the paper. Offset and digital processes yield a flat surface.
The best papers for letterpress printing are made from cotton or bamboo and are thicker than paper typically used for other printing processes. Biba primarily uses Arturo papers made in Italy. Though whites are most popular, our papers are available in a variety of colors with matching envelopes. Deckled, or feathered, edged paper is a popular choice for wedding invitations.
Ink color is only limited to your whatever your heart desires. While we stock a number of signature ink colors, we can match ink to the Pantone system or other references. Send us a snippet of your favorite shirt, heirloom quilt or festive cape and we can match it.
